Celebrating their 4th year anniversary, SS501 is stronger than ever before, with countless endorsements under their belt and a massive Asia Tour in the pipelines.
It was a hot summer night in June 2005. Five relatively unknown boys, dressed in white suits were on an outdoor stage singing their song, "Everything". A handful of fans were seen at the front of the stage, frantically waving the green balloons – the band's official colour. It was the first time Korea was seeing them perform on television. Not many people knew what happened after that. The five members retreated to the car park and some of them broke down in tears. Heo Young Saeng said, in between sobs, "It's just so much like a dream and we made it." Their tears were tinged with gratefulness and relief. After years of preparation, that night marked the birth of their pop group, SS501.
Four years later on the first of August, the same five guys, stood in front of 10,000 screaming fans in the Seoul Olympic Stadium, as they kicked off their first Asia Tour.
Humble Beginnings
SS501 first entered the Korean music scene on the 8 June 2005 with the single "Warning". During the time of SS501's debut, Shinhwa and Dong Bang Shin Ki dominated the scene. Truth be told, not many people expected the lesser-known SS501 to last. To make matters worse, main vocalist Young Saeng was stricken with a throat condition and had to undergo surgery in August 2006. Needing time to recuperate, the band took a hiatus from Korean activities for the most part of 2006 and only returned with their first full-length album S.T 01 Now in November, more than a year after their first debut. The album was surprisingly a hit and it showed how their fan club, Triple S, never forgot about them. Their song, "Four Chance" went on to win the Mutizen Award (an award given to the most popular song for the week) on music show, InkiGayo in January 2007. In a fickle Korean pop industry, it is quite a feat for SS501 as most Korean boy bands do not last beyond a year.
